September 20, 2007 - New Orleans, LA:
PERT TO HEADLINE 3RD ANNUAL LECTURESHIP SERIES AT LSUHSC SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
(New Orleans, LA – August 29, 2007) –Dr. Larry Hollier, Chancellor of the LSU Health Sciences Center and Dean of the School of Medicine, today announced the third annual Drs. Robert S. Daniels and Vikki Ashley 3rd Annual Distinguished Lectureship in Medical Education which will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at the LSUHSC School of Medicine Medical Education Building, Lecture Room A, 1901 Perdido, New Orleans from 12:00 – 1:30 pm.
The lecture will feature Dr. Candace B. Pert, who will speak on “Manifesting The End of AIDS: The Science and Story of Peptide T.” DR. Pert is founder and chief scientific 0fficer of RAPID Pharmaceuticals, Inc., former research professor, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, Georgetown University College of Medicine, and former section chief, Brain Biochemistry, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
“This is a premier event of our medical education year, and we are very honored to have one of the nation’s, indeed the world’s, foremost researchers as our speaker,” said Hollier. “We look forward to welcoming teachers, students as well as the public to this very special event which also honors two leaders in medical education, Drs. Bob Daniels and Vikki Ashley.”
The lecture is free and open to the public.
Pert’s over 30 years of research at the NIH and in the private sector has focused on endorphins and other neuropeptide receptors in the brain and immune system provided a biochemical basis for communication between mind and body and she pioneered the emergence of the field of psychoneuroimmunology. She has an international reputation in the field of receptor pharmacology and has lectured worldwide on these and other medical subjects, including her theories of emotions, wellness and mind-body communication. She is the author of the best-selling book Molecules of Emotion: Why You Feel the Way You Feel (Scribner, 1997). Her most recent book from Hay House (2006)—Everything You Need To Know To Feel Go(o)D, makes a clear and scientific case for the power and reality of new paradigm thinking—how our thoughts do create reality. She is now a practicing scientist and biotech entrepreneur who has authored almost 300 scientific papers.
In the mid-1980’s, while researching the then surprising existence of classical immune cell receptors in the brain, Pert developed the first of a new class of treatments for HIV/AIDS, the viral entry inhibitor Peptide T. This nontoxic experimental therapeutic blocks the virus from binding to its cellular chemokine receptor CCR5 and infecting the cell. Recent human studies show that Peptide T substantially reduces HIV in the blood and the treatment resistant, persistently infected cellular reservoirs which do not respond to current therapies. Currently, Dr. Pert is focused on creating the first truly effective vaccine that will eradicate AIDS in the world.
Pert has also become part of an international following of people who saw her in What the Bleep Do We Know!#$%!, a sleeper hit that enthralled audiences. She was also a participant in Bill Moyers’ TV program Healing And The Mind! Her books and tapes are available on Amazon.com and hayhouse.com.
Dr. Pert will be accompanied by her spouse, Dr. Michael Ruff, who is her partner in RAPID Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and her research partner in her AIDS work.
